In continuing his conceptual explorations of experiential and participatory art, Sherburne created The Artist VS. The DJ event. This installation invited ten artists and designers to DJ a half-hour set of their chosen music during gallery hours. The resulting exhibition challenged what is considered artistic output and instead put the focus on artists generating experiential work in a common medium. This project embodied Sherburnes ongoing investigation into the social structures manifest in the creation, viewing and display of artwork. The project also aims to challenge the traditional expectations of artistic production as well as characterize the evolving role of the contemporary artist as performer, sampler, instigator, event planner and community builder.
