City of Edmonton ETS Centennial Garage Public Art Commission
The Public Art installation for the South Edmonton Transit Garage focuses primarily on light and movement. The linear architectural sculpture installation mirrors the forms that comprise the matrix of our cities landscape. This landscape is often experienced as part of a daily commute and although the passenger is in motion, the blurred landscape experienced by the commuter generates its own momentum and movement. This sculptural installation alludes to that movement and the bits of form, colour and light that pass by the bus window as commuters travel to their destinations.During the day the sculptural installation maintains its presence via its powdercoated colored forms that adhere to a palette of black, red and grey and refer both in form and color to the architectural landscape of Edmonton. During the evening hours the sculpture comes to life as an ever changing and evolving pattern of form and light. A system of Red Green Blue environmentally friendly LEDs create a constantly shifting spectrum of color that emits from behind each linear wall form. Here the sculpture most clearly represents the experience of a commuter passing by the many forms and colors that comprise our city in the evening hours. With the juxtaposition of the architecturally linear forms and shifting spectrum of light, the sense of movement and visual vibrance of this installation will continually engage and invite viewers of the work much in the same way as the landscape of our city does.
