The Art Bar installation consisted of a fully functioning bar environment housed in the exhibition space of the Art Gallery of Alberta. The project challenged definitions of participatory art work, conceptual and installation art, the practice of design and dealt with aspects of social engagement in a context generated by the experience of art. Art Bar was an attendance record shattering event that generated much debate over the evolving role of the artist and designer as well as raising questions about disciplinary borders, authorship, participation, pop culture and a multitude of other aspects associated to the creation, exhibition and dissemination of a creative project. The conceptual histories of art and design as well as current theory and contemporary creative practice are scrutinized and implemented in the creation and exhibition of Sherburne's ambitious project. The success of the project and the critical dialogue generated by its concept resulted in numerous national press features as well as additional opportunities to explore the project internationally.
