This introductory design assignment looks at the development of a wordmark for a fictitious band. (The fictitious bands as well as wordmark are later incorporated into the CD label design project.) The students are asked to choose from a selection of 50 fonts and then develop a wordmark that suits the band name and style. Lessons on kerning, grid, serif vs. sans serif, etc help the student focus on the intricacies of type design. The final word mark is hand rendered with design pen and then presented.
